New Riders
Welcome to our new riders page,
To be able to ride a motorcycle on the road with L plates you must have a provisional licence and a CBT.
CBT – Compulsory Basic Training
What CBT involves
Compulsory basic training (CBT) has 5 elements:
- introduction and eyesight check
- practical on-site training
- practical on-site riding
- practical on-road training
- practical on-road riding
You’ll move from one element to the next when your trainer is happy you’ve:
- learnt the theory
- shown the practical skills to a safe basic level
How many people you’ll train with
You might train with other learners. There’s a maximum number of:
- 4 learners per trainer for on-site elements
- 2 learners per trainer for on-road elements
Bikes that can be ridden on a A1 Licence or a CBT
Licence Category A1 – For ages 17 and above.
This test is intended for riders who never wish to ride anything larger than a 125cc motorcycle. (If the rider obtained a CBT at 17 years old, which lasts for two years, then at 19 years old, he can take an A2 licence test.)
Each licence test is made up of the same elements:
- Theory Test
- Practical Test
The theory test is made up of a multiple-choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test.
If you pass 1 part and fail the other you’ll fail the whole test, and you’ll need to take both parts again.
.
The practical motorcycle test is split into 2 separate modules:
- off-road module ( Module 1 )
- on-road module ( Module 2 )
You need to pass both modules to get a full motorcycle licence.
You can book both modules at the same time, but you must pass module 1 before you take module 2.
If you don’t pass module 1, you must wait 3 full working days before you can retake it.
Both Modules will be taken on a 125CC motorcycle, once passed it will allow you to ride on the road on a similar sized bike without L plates.
Bikes that can be ridden on a A2
Licence Category A2 – For ages 19 and above.
There are two routes into this licence, direct access or staged access. Direct access is for a rider who is 19 years old, who has had no previous experience. Staged access is for the rider who has had a CBT for two years and wishes to move to a more powerful bike.
